2007 Research Buyer’s Guide – update
Production is well underway and on schedule to be delivered by early September. Thanks to all who renewed their listings, added new ones, purchased advertising; and to those who became new corporate members recently – the campaign has met with resounding success at just under 400 separate listings and over 20 advertisers.


2007 Membership Directory (deadline: July 13)
We are currently preparing to print the 2007 Edition of the MRIA National Membership Directory. You can revise and update your Membership Profile until July 13, 2007. After that date, we will print in the 2007 MRIA Membership Directory using the contact information that currently appears in your Membership Profile. To view, modify or complete the information included in your Membership Profile, please login to the MRIA Portal and select the following application in "My Menu": My Membership Profile / Update My Profile.


NOW is the time to join as new Individual or Corporate members
Starting July 3, MRIA will introduce pro-rated membership dues and fees for first-time members of the Association, which are available from July 1 to December 31, 2007:

  • New Individual members can join for six months at the reduced rate of $180 (plus $50 Activation Fee plus GST). Please inform your friends and colleagues in the industry, and enroll your new employees so they can start receiving the benefits of MRIA membership. 
  • New Corporate representatives can join for six months, at the reduced rate of $180 (plus GST), which includes an Individual membership for the Corporate representative (a $50 Initiation Fee still applies). Preferred Research Registration fees have also been pro-rated for this six-month period.

2007 MRIA National Conference: our changing communities
In a word – SUCCESS in numbers of attendees, speakers, sponsors, tradeshow presence, give aways, golf, venues, meals, awards – we’ll be updating the website over the next two weeks, to include speaker presentations, for attendees to access in a password protected section. And to everyone who participated – THANK YOU.


Excellence in Research Awards
Congratulations go out to this year’s winners:

For Best In Class (sponsored by Molson Canada): Environics Research Group won the award for a research project that serves as a shining example to research practitioners and users. Environics worked on a study for Canadian Tourism Commission to support the CTC, Keep Exploring brand strategy. It integrated several research methodologies including focus groups and online surveys in Canada, the US and the UK, a cluster segmentation and geodemographic profiling by Environics analytics PRIZM system.

For Best Integration (sponsored by Research Strategy Group): CorbinPartners Inc. won the award in recognition of a research project that demonstrates successful integration of market research with other information sources. Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP partnered on this project which included a mystery shopping component raised to scientific standards, statistical analysis of worldwide advertising and sales and an expert marketing review of relevant issues in brand equity and reputational harm. It represented the first time a Canadian court has accepted mystery shopping as expert survey evidence in an intellectual property dispute.

Thanks go to the 2007 Awards Chair, Nik Nanos, along with judges Joanne Tofani and Jordan Levitin.

FIELD MANAGEMENT GROUP COMMITTEE – a new initiative

The Field Management Group was born out of the desire of field managers to address issues affecting today’s field operations and ultimately, the whole market research business sector. The following is the FMG’s mission:

  1. To promote high standards and good practices within the research industry.
  2. To improve the overall quality of services offered by field companies, quantitative and qualitative alike.
  3. To increase the presence of field companies within the MRIA organization.
  4. To bring to the MRIA membership ideas and solutions to issues of concern like respondent cooperation, interviewer turnover, sampling issues due to increase of cell-phone only households, etc.

To make this happen, we need your contribution and support. If you feel you can contribute and help the Field Management Group achieve its goals and are interested in becoming a member of the MRIA Field Management Group Committee please contact: Nancy Gulland at nancy@maverickresearch.com. Heed the Call! - Research Users Committee Fields Survey
The Research Users Committee announced on June 26, 2007 that they will conduct the first ever research buyer opinion survey. Access to the survey will begin with an e-mail delivered on July 5 with a personalized invitation and link to the questionnaire form.

The survey invitation will go to the RUC membership sponsor and will ask opinions on a variety of topics such as types of methodologies used, research budget sources, even salaries and hiring practices.

The survey is completely confidential and any user who fills in the survey will receive the results. Prophis Research, an on-line research firm, will provide the survey software necessary to complete this research. The Research Users Committee will conduct research analysis and reporting.

B2B Division: WEDNESDAY AUGUST 14, 2007 -- 1 PM EST

INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR SERIES – Ethnographic Research in the B2B Environment

Alex Johnston will present his award-winning paper which reviews the feasibility of conducting B2B ethnographic research. This webinar will be divided into three areas:

  • ETHNOGRAPHY 101 – how ethnography involved in studying the “overt values and beliefs of a culture”; how does ethnography compare with qualitative research (and distinctions between the two).
  • WHAT ETHNOGRAPHY MEANS FOR B2B RESEARCH – how ethnographic approaches can be applied to the B2B environment.
  • A B2B ETHNOGRAPHIC CASE STUDY – Jigsaw Research funded a B2B ethnographic research study on an experimental basis based on studying communication patterns in SME’s.
