School of Marketing Research Renamed;
And Other Key Education and CMRP Changes Approved

The MRIA Board of Directors has approved a name change for the School of Marketing Research.  This vitally important area in the Association’s suite of member services and benefits is now called the Institute of Professional Development.

Another Board-approved change in the Education Portfolio area is an initiative to make all 12 “core courses” – necessary to earn the CMRP designation – available online by the Fall of 2009, so that members pursuing professional certification can take these courses on a convenient, self-paced basis from wherever they can access the internet.

Also beginning in 2009, an online exam will be made available for each MRIA course.  A modest additional fee will be charged to write these online exams, but a student who takes a course will not be required to write the exam.  However, to receive credit for having “successfully completed” a course (particularly if pursuing the CMRP) a student will have to take the online exam and achieve a prescribed minimum pass mark.

Students will be permitted to “challenge” the online exam for any course, without having to pay for and take the course itself, but the same modest exam fee and the minimum pass mark will apply.

Finally, the Board of Directors has improved the implementation of a Maintenance of Certification policy – also known as Mandatory Continuing Education or Continuing Professional Development – for CMRP designation holders.  This policy, which will require CMRPs to obtain a prescribed number of Maintenance of Certification credits over a two-year period, will be phased in gradually, beginning in 2009.

Democracy Online: Pushing the limits or creating new frontiers

Canadian speakers include Jean Marc Leger and Nik Nanos. The discussion centres on the impact of online technologies on opinion polling voter trends and the future of democracy.

What Doctors Want... From Market Research

McWhirter & Associates conducts many research projects every year with physicians. Because of the company’s specialty in this type of research it was interested in learning a little more about why – and why not – physicians agree to participate in market research projects. In addition, given the variety of methodologies available for conducting research, the company was interested in obtaining some sense of doctors’ preferences and experiences with each of the main market research methodologies.
